Application Development
Which parts qualify? Design-for-AM, test prints, validation to production-ready.
What we do
- Parts screening: which candidates are best suited for Wire-LMD or LPBF
- Design-for-AM: redesign existing parts or design new geometries only AM can deliver
- Test prints, validation, material tests through to production-ready specification
How the process unfolds
-
01
Candidate screening Top 3–5 parts from your portfolio with the highest return potential.
-
02
Design-for-AM workshop With your engineers: redesign for topology, cost, function integration.
-
03
Test print and validation First prints, mechanical tests, dimensional control, NDT.
-
04
Production specification Parameters, toolpathing, post-processing — documented and repeatable.
Who this service is for
- R&D departments integrating metal AM into new product lines
- Production companies redesigning existing parts for cost reduction or better performance
- Companies with one-off or low-volume demand where conventional production is uneconomic
Real-world examples
Closed impeller redesign for Wire-LMD
A pump component normally delivered as a 2-part casting was redesigned into a single Wire-LMD print. Result: significantly lighter, no weld-seam weakness, and a much shorter lead time compared to the casting route.
Tooling insert with conformal cooling
An injection-mold insert received internal conformal cooling channels via LPBF. Cycle time at the end customer dropped 25%, and hot spots in the part disappeared. Validation via thermal measurements over 50,000 cycles.
Topology-optimized bracket for aerospace
Aluminum bracket for satellite application. Classic 280g from billet, redesigned to 95g via Wire-LMD with FEA-driven topology. Validation via tensile test and vibration analysis — meets aerospace spec.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my part qualifies for AM?
That is exactly what application development answers. We screen for geometry, volume, material requirements, and current production cost. Not every part is a good AM candidate — we will tell you honestly.
Do we have to throw out our current drawings and start over?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Many parts can be printed directly as they are now (drop-in). But it is usually worth looking at whether a light redesign for AM gives big cost or performance gains.
How many test prints are in an application project?
Depending on complexity and material. Simple geometries in known alloys often succeed in few iterations. New materials or extreme geometries require more experimentation. We agree the iteration approach upfront, matched to your budget and goal.
What if validation shows AM does not work for our part?
Then we stop the effort early and you have a substantiated answer — no waiting a year to find out. Conclusions and lessons are yours. We only bill for the work actually performed.
